Marathi version of book on Mumbai University

Mumbai, July 4: Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde released the Marathi version of the book on the history of Mumbai University at a ceremony held at the University convocation auditorium here.

Releasing the book titled, Aisa Sgyansagru (biography of Mumbai University), penned by prominent journalist and a former Loksatta Editor Aroon Tikekar, Mr Shinde said the book was not simply about 150-year old history of the Mumbai University but the history of India's renaissance and economic development.

''The Book is about the history of an University which came into existence along with India's freedom struggle against the colonial rule. So the book is simply not the history of this great institution but also the history of India's socio-economic and socio-political development,'' he said.

Mr Shinde said that this landmark institution had started imparting knowledge for reforming the society one-a-half centuries ago, and it will continue to do.

The book was earlier released in English titled 'A Cloister's Pale' and it covered the first i25 years of the Mumbai University.

However, the Marathi version encompasses the 150 years of the Institution, which it completed in July last year.
