TMMK agitates against USS Nimitz

Chennai, July 3 (UNI) Members of the Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK), including women, today staged a demonstration here, condemning the Centre's act of permitting US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Nimitz to anchor off Chennai Port.

Speaking on the occasion, TMMK State President M H Jawahirullah, who led the agitation, said USS Nimitz was a threat to mankind as its nuclear capabilities had the potential to fatally pollute the environment. Even when the US allies like Australia, New Zealand and Japan have denied permission to this carrier to dock in their ports, it was a pity that the Union Government had permitted the ''deadly'' warship to call on Chennai port.

The demonstrators also burnt a replica of USS Nimitz and a flag of the United States at the protest venue.
