Three fishermen arrested for trespassing in NIMITZ

Chennai, Jul 3 (UNI) Three fishermen of Kasimedu fishing hamlet were arrested today by the police for allegedly trespassing into a pilot ship of the USS NIMITZ and creating panic amongst the security personnel.

The ship is docked at about three nautical miles off the Chennai port.

Acting on the information, a police team led by R Rajagopal, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Port Marine Police wing rushed to the spot. On seeing the police team, the fishermen attempted to flee from the scene, with their mechanised boat. Police, however, gave a hot chase and rounded them.

The arrested were identified as Ramesh (35), Kannan (32) and Bhaskar (32).

Mr Rajagopal said investigations revealed that the fishermen, who were throw-away from their net for fishing, got stuck in the side portion of the pilot ship.

A fisherman, in order to remove the net from the pilot ship, climbed into it. The captain, who noticed it, send an SOS to the special control room, who in turn, alerted the Port Marine police station, he added.

The fishermen were produced before a lower court. All the three were fined a sum of Rs 970 each and let-off.
