Sensex, Nifty hit a record high, closes at new high
Mumbai, July 3: Tracking the firm trend in world markets, banking, telecom and metal shares fuelled the ongoing rally on the local bourses with the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Sensex posting an handsome gain of 142 points to close at a new record high of 14805.60.
The S&P Cnx Nifty index of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) too finished at a new high of 4357.55 points, netting a gain of 33.80 points from the previous close of 4313.75 points.
Today, was the fifth straight trading session, the market continued its firm trend and the Sensex added 374.54 points in the five day rally on the country's premier bourse.
According to market circles, the IT stocks stayed subdued on lack of buying interest. They have not participated in the recent market rally on concerns of Rupee appreciating further.
Mirroring the uptrend, the 30-stocks BSE Sensex opened at 14720 points, it touched the day's high of 14828.39 points, fell to the day's low of 14720.00 points, before finishing at 14805.60 points, registering a gain of 142.25 points or 0.97 per cent from the previous close of 14664.26 points.
Similarly, the S&P Cnx Nifty index opened firm at 4315.05 points, it touched the day's high of 4363.35 points, touched the day's low of 4313.55 points, before closing at 4357.55 points, showing a net gain of 33.80 points from the previous close of 4313.75 points.
The NYSE Composite Index ended higher by 1.26 per cent at 9997.43 points, Nasdaq composite index too closed higher by 1.12 per cent at 2632.30 points. The Dow Joines industrial average advanced by 0.95 points at 13535.43 points. In Tokyo, the Nikkei-225 index also ended higher by 0.02 per cent at 18149.90 points.
The prominent stocks leading the rally on the BSE included Bharati Tele, which gained by 29.25 to Rs 866.60 followed by SBI by Rs 51.55 to Rs 1582.45, Grasim by Rs 84.05 to Rs 2702.55, FMCG major HLL by Rs 5.60 to Rs 194.65, Maruti by Rs 12.75 to Rs 784.10, Guj Ambuja by Rs 1.95 to Rs 124.40, ITC by Rs 2.10 to Rs 156.10, Reliance communication by Rs 6.90 to Rs 536.60, petrochem major Reliance by Rs 20.95 to Rs 1705, Tata Steel by Rs 7.30 to RS 600.70, Satyam Computer by Rs 5 to Rs 471.45, Bhel by Rs 13.80 to Rs 1546.80, Tata Motor by Rs 3.90 to Rs 687.95, HDFC Bank by Rs 4.50 to Rs 1150.50, and Infosys Tech by Rs 4.40 to Rs 1947.05.
The losers list included Reliance Energy, which lost by Rs 10 to Rs 614.30 followed by HDFC by Rs 32.50 to Rs 1998.20, Bajaj auto by Rs 30.95 to Rs 2098, ONGC by Rs 8.20 to Rs 887.90, Hindalco by Rs 0.90 to Rs 157.55.
Reflecting the market mood, BSE Bankex index shot up by 150.22 points at 7990.48 points, BSE's Consumer Durable index ended lower' by 8.55 points at 4264.90 points, BSE-Consumer Goods Index advanced smartly by 107.76 points at 12420.15 points, BSE-FMCG index gained by 24.36 points at 1824.00 points and BSE-Metal index rose by 99.90 points at 1056.32 points.
As many as 1,444 shares advanced and 1,223 declined on the BSE, while 64 remained unchanged during the course of trading. The BSE clocked a total turnover at Rs 4893 crore as against Rs 4,327.39 crore on Monday, July 2.
The NSE clocked a total turnover at Rs 10,428.07 crore involving a total trade in 4878 lakh shares.
NSE's F&O turnover was Rs 33917.8 crore, as against Rs 34061.14 crore on Monday.
