RBI tells banks to maintain 'do not call registry'

Mumbai, Jul 3 (UNI) With a view to protect the right to privacy of the members of the public, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) today instructed all scheduled commercial banks to maintain a 'Do Not Call Registry' about credit card operation.

In order to tackle complaints relating to unsolicited commercial communications (UCC) being received by customers and non-customers as part of telemarketing efforts of Banks, the Central Bank has told the scheduled commercial banks not to engage telemarketers, who do not have a valid registration certificate from Department of Telecommunications (DoT) as telemarketers.

Banks should furnish the list of telemarketers engaged by them along with the registered telephone numbers being used by them for making telemarketing calls to IBA to enable IBA to forward the same to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) within three months from the date of issue of the guidelines for Telemarketers by DoT, RBI said in a notification.
