Property worth lakhs gutted, woman suffers burns

Varanasi, July 3 (UNI) Property running into lakhs of rupees was gutted and an aged woman sustained severe burns in a fire at a three-storeyed house in the Chowk area here this evening.

Radha Devi (60), the land lady of the house in Raja Darwaja locality suffered severe burns in a fire which originated from one of the four commercial godowns and shops located in the basement of the house, police said.

Before the fire tenders could be pressed into action, the fire spread to the other three shops and upper floors of the house, reducing to ashes property worth lakhs of rupees.

The four shops whose property was gutted included two plastic good shops, a perfume shop and a readymade garment godown.

Owing to narrow lanes it took almost four hours for the fire-tenders to douse the fire.

The aged woman burnt in the fire has been rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
