HC orders govt to file affidavit on petition over jails condition
Allahabad, July 3 (UNI) The Allahabad High court today ordered the State government and DGP Jail to file affidavits on a petition filed for improving jail conditions and providing basic facilities to the prisoners.
A bench comprising Justices Sunil Ambani and Bharti Sapru pronounced the decision on a petition filed by the Criminal Law Practisioner Assosiation.
The petitioner had stated the pathetic condition of jail inmates, highlighting the scarcity of space, as 70,000 prisoners had been lodged in the jails with the capacity of only 36,000.
The petitioner had further asked to provide compensation to the family members of the prisoners, who had died in the last 10 years.
It had also mentioned that court is the medium to send accused to jails, thus it is the duty of the court to protect their rights.
It apprised the court about the inferior quality food provided to the prisoners and alleged that only mafias were provided with good diet.
Next hearing on the petition is on July 24.
