Doctor couple's bail plea rejected

Tiruchirapalli, July 3 (UNI) A local court today dismissed the bail petition of the controversial doctor couple Dr K Murugesan and his wife Dr M Gandhimathy, who had violated the ethics and rules of the Indian Medical Act by allowing their teenaged son to perform caesarean surgery on a woman at Manapparai recently.

When the bail plea came up for hearing, Public Prosecutor R Edwin Jayakumar argued that it was not a fit case for granting bail since investigation was on and the case was still in the primary stage.

Accepting the argument of the Public Prosecutor, Tiruchirapalli Principal Sessions Judge Thanga Kani dismissed the bail petition.

The 'boy surgeon' M Dhileepan Raj, a Xth standard student, had performed the surgery at the instigation of his parents. The surgery was recorded on video and screened at the meeting of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) at Manapparai on May six, 2007, by Dr Murugesan.

Tiruchirapalli Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) S Ramanidharan, who had been assigned to probe the case, had got statements from 24 medicos who had witnessed the video presentation.

It may be recalled that the Madurai bench of Madras High Court had on June 29 last refused anticipatory bail to Dhileepan Raj, who was still absconding and evading police arrest.
