A night of musical jugalbandi between Pt Shiv Sharma and his son

New Delhi, July 3 (UNI) Tradition and purity of santoor blended with contemporary fusion notes left several music lovers in the capital mesmerised here as two generations of legendary artistes came together for a harmonious symphony.

Elevating the audience of music enthusiasts to a blissful, sublime world of eternal music this Saturday night was a musical 'jugalbandi' between renowned santoor exponent and music maestro Pt Shiv Kumar Sharma and his son Rahul Sharma, years after the first ravishing performance of father-son duo in 'Santoor Virasat'.

''I'll play my son Rahul's composition along with him,'' said Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma before commencing the marvellous musical expedition, making it unique in itself. Sharing the stage after eight long years the father-son-duo soon stole the show with their proficiency in playing 'the hundred strings instrument'.

With the coming together of Pt Shiv Kumar Sharma, today regarded as a legend in the field of classical music, and son Rahul Sharma, who has established himself as one of the greatest exponents in fusion music, the 'Jugalbandi' proved to be a perfect blend of classical music and the fusion sounds characterising today's young musicians.

Titled 'Black and White Unbelong Symphony', the concert is an exclusive platform for artistes to showcase their unconventional skills in a conventional setting.

A musical evening arranged by Black and White, 'Jugalbandi' is unique in itself showcasing not just one of the greatest musical talents of the country but also displaying a beautiful blend of musical symphony from two generations of legendary artistes.

For most of those present, the 'Unbelong concert' was a memorable experience. ''I have no words to eulogise, all I can say is, it's a lifetime experience,'' said Ms Rajni , a invitee at the show.

Three generations of the Sharmas devoted to music embarked with Pandit Uma Dutt Sharma who brought Santoor, a Kashmiri folk instrument of Sufiana music out of the valley into national and international prominence.

Padma Vibhushan award-winning Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, a legend in himself, has successfully placed his father's opus to unattainable heights and, in turn, passed on his prodigious knowledge of music to his younger generation- Rahul Sharma. He is so far the only one to match his fathers' tonality, finish and rhythmic wizardry.

Rahul has followed in the footsteps of his father popularising classical music among younger generation.
