Cauvery basin reservoirs receive good inflow

Mysore, July 2: The South West Monsoon in the Cauvery basin region continued to be active with incessant rain lashing Kodagu, Hassan and Mysore districts since one week has resulted in increased reservoirs levels.

Meteorological Department forecast normal monsoon in the region for the period of July to September. Wet conditions would prevail in the region with occasional sunny weather breaking in.

Heavy rainfall in the Cauvery catchment area in Kodagu brought increased inflow into Krishnaraja Sagar reservoir, the main dam across the river in Karnataka, near here. The level was hovering a low of 67 feet during the third week of June and today stood at 92.60 feet, against the full capacity of 124.80 feet. The inflow was at 43,489 cusecs and outflow was stepped up to 14,330 cusecs.

Both Kabini and Harangi reservoirs in the basin have also reported good inflows following the rains in the catchment areas.

The Kabini level stood today was 2277.13 feet against the maximum level of 2284 feet with inflow of 26,695 cusecs and outflow was 9026 cusecs, while the Harangi level read 2841.49 feet against full capacity of 2259 feet.

Similarly Hemavathy reservoir in Hassan district also received heavy inflows with level reading 2294 feet against the maximum level of 2922 feet. However, the quantum of rain was reduced today.

The Hassan district administration had put losses due to rain fury during the last three days at Rs two crore taking up the total loss to Rs 15 crore during this monsoon. In Kodagu the losses were estimated at Rs 11.50 crore.
