New Delhi: Scrutiny for Presidential polls today
New Delhi, July 2: The race for India's highest constitutional post enters its closing lap today when scrutiny of nominations for the July 19 Presidential elections will be taken up.
A total of 84 nominations were filed for the presidential polls with as many as thirty three new nomination papers being received on the last day.
UPA candidate Pratibha Patil filed her nominations after resigning from the post of Rajasthan Governor.
Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat is contesting the elections as an Independent candidate backed by the NDA.
The last date for withdrawal of nominations is July 4 and the counting of votes is slated for July 21.
The term of President Kalam will end on July 24 and the new president will assume office the following day.
As many as 776 Members of Parliament, including 543 from the Lok Sabha, and 4,120 legislators from various states, including Delhi and Puducherry, constitute the electoral college whose total vote value comes to 10,98,882 votes.
The ruling UPA alliance has got over 5.13 lakh votes while the strength of the opposition NDA is over 3.54 lakh votes and the combination of eight regional parties constituting the Third Front accounts for 1.05 lakh votes.
