Gurdeep Singh appointed Chairman of Ayurvedic, Unani Board

Chandigarh, Jul 2 (UNI) The Punjab Government has appointed Mr Gurdeep Singh, Joint Secretary, Medical Education and Research, as Chairman, Board of Ayurvedic and Unani System of Medicines.

Dr Ashwani Sharma, Principal, Government Ayurvedic College, Patiala, has been given the additional charge of Director, Ayurvedic and Research.

These appointments were made under Section 2(C) of 'The Punjab Ayurvedic and Unani Practitioner Act, 1963 without involving any additional financial burden, Medical Education and Research Minister Tikshan Sood said.

He said, the state government had initiated a number of steps to revamp the Medical Education system in general and Ayurvedic disciplines, in particular, in the state.

Mr Sood charged the previous Congress Government of adopting an indifferent attitude towards Ayurveda and said it had not spent even a single penny for its development.

However, he said the present SAD-BJP Government was fully concerned about the development of Ayurveda and would bring a revolutionary change in popularizing the Ayurvedic system of medicines.

He said that Rs 50 lakh would be utilized to upgrade the infrastructure of Government Ayurvedic College and Hospital at Patiala this year. A provision of Rs 1.65 crore had also been made in the 11th Five Year Plan for this.

He said the Government would fill-up the vacant posts of teachers in the Ayurvedic College so that the intake capacity of the college could be increased from 40 to 100 students. Besides, the Government planned to introduce PG courses in Ayurveda, he added.
