Govt in touch with Maharashtra on release from Koyna dam

Bangalore, July 2 (UNI) Karnataka Revenue Minister Jagdish Shettar today said that the government was in constant touch with Maharashtra for the release of Koyna water following the incessant rains in its border districts of Sanlgi and Solapur.

Speaking to newspersons here he said that the officials had met their counterparts in Maharashtra and agreed to coordinate in the release of extra water from Koyna in view of its effects on the districts of Bijapur, Bagalkot and Belgaum.

Both the states were constantly monitoring the increased inflow of water into the Koyna dam following heavy rains, he said.

He said the damage due to the release of extra water from Koyna dam was less this year as the government had taken precautionary measures in comparison to the last two years.

Stating that the state had suffered a loss of Rs 157.2 crore due to rain havoc so far and the government would send a report on the estimated loss shortly to the Centre for its immediate assistance.

He said a Cabinet Sub Commitee on drought and flood reliefs is being convened late in the day, today.
