EC files 471 cases against political parties in TN

Chennai, July 2 (UNI) The Election Commission has filed cases against 471 people, including 412 cases against the Opposition AIADMK and 29 against the ruling DMK, for furnishing false claims for inclusion during the summary revision of electoral rolls, 2005.

Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta, in a release here today, said the cases were filed in respective jurisdictions and the petitions were vetted by the ECI counsel.

Apart from the two major parties, DMK and the AIADMK, three cases each were filed against MDMK and PMK, one against the BJP and 22 against others.

The cases were pending in courts, it added.

The release said following receipt of large number of claims in bulk, the CEO processed them and accepted only one third of it.

In respect of Ponneri Assembly constituency, 8,312 claims were received in bulk, apart from 11,431 individual claims for inclusion in the electoral rolls, taking the total number of claims to 19,743.

Of this only 8,742 claims were admitted, the release said and added that complaints in respect of Ponneri were filed on May 30, 2005.
