Srinagar, July 2 (UNI) Five people, including three militants, were killed while Jammu and Kashmir police averted three major tragedies in the state during the past 24 hours.

An official spokesman said, militants abducted and killed one Khushi Mohammad at Kabra Top in Reasi district of Jammu region last night.

He said, an encounter took place during a search operation at Dali Kulhand in which three militants were killed. A security jawan also lost his life, he added.

A police patrol party noticed an unclaimed parcel at the crowded Bonbazar in south Kashmir district of Shopian this afternoon, an official spokesman said.

He said the area was immediately sealed and all those present were shifted to safer places.

Later, a Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) was summoned and the 5 kg IED (Improvised Explosive Device) was defused without causing any damage.

He also mentioned another IED, planted in a water pipe, was detected and later defused by the police at Rajpora in Pulwama district while a live hand grenade was defused at Gund-e-Kangan.

Had the IEDs and grenade not been detected and defused in time, it would have caused a major damage to life and property, he said.
