Two cos to extract diesel from sunken ship

Mangalore, July 1 (UNI) Two companies have been entrusted with the task of extracting marine diesel and furnace slag from the sunken Eritria ship 'M V Den Den' off Mangalore coast at Tannirbavi Beach near New Mangalore Port on Saturday last.

According to a press release issued by the Deputy Commission of Daxina Kannada M Maheshwar Rao on Saturday night, two companies- one from Netherland and one from Mumbai had been entrusted the work of extracting the furnace slag and marine diesel from the sunken ship in which three crew members were killed and 21 others were rescued.

Meetings were held on June 27 and 28 in which the owner of the ship and officials from the insurance companies participated and discussions held on removing the sunken ship from the waters.

He clarified that no incident of leakage of furnace slag or marine diesel was found so far from the sunken ship. All precautionary measures had been taken by officials from Fisheries Department, police, port and the members of district pollution control board camping at Tannirbavi keeping constant watch, he said.

Meanwhile, the four experts who were expected from Mumbai - two from Holland and two from Mumbai for conducting survey and prepare plan of action for extracting marine diesel and furnace slag from the sunken ship and salvage of ship, could not arrive here as no flights could take off from Mumbai Airport due to heavy rains and bad weather condition.
