Highest ever 84 nominations filed for Prez polls

New Delhi, June 30 (UNI) As many as thirty three new nominations were submitted today on the last date of filing nominations for the Presidential elections scheduled for July 19.

With this, the total number of nominations received at office of the Returning Officer/Assistant Returning Officer stood at 84.

Never before in the history of free India have such large number of nominations been filed for the Presidential elections.

The thirty three nomination papers filed today consisted of two sets of nominations from the UPA supported independent candidate Mrs Pratibha Patil.

As many as 20 sets of nominations out of the 33 filed today were rejected. Those rejected included: Mr Prem Singh Saine from Haridwar, Uttarakhand, Mr Daniel Ray of Howrah, West Bengal, Mr Amar Singh Pal of Delhi, Dr Leo Rebello of Mumbai, Mr Harbhajan Singh and Mr Dharm Prakash, advocate, from Amritsar, Punjab, Mr Vijay Gupta of Jammu, Mr Anand Singh Kushwah of Gwalior and Mr Hari Ballab Sharma of Ashoknagar, Madhya Pradesh, Mr Pandit Shivkumar of Gurgaon, Haryana, Mr Suraj Prakash Vaid from Delhi, Mr Mahendra Kumar Verma of Indore, Madhya Pradesh, Dr Udit Kumar Asharam Thakur of Gujarat and others.

The last nomination of the day was filed by Mr Gyani Sant Santi Prasad (Lalji maharaj) of Udaipur, Rajasthan, without any supporting documents and so it was rejected then and there itself.

So far, the office of the RO/ARO have rejected an altogether of 37 nomination papers.

All the rest of nomination papers will be scrutinised on July 2.
