Rs 140 crore project to 'rehabilitate' Bist canal in Punjab
Chandigarh, Jun 29 (UNI) To increase the irrigation intensity of Bist Doab Canal system in the Doaba Region, a project of Rs 140.48 crore has been prepared by the Punjab Government, Irrigation Minister Janmeja Singh Sekhon told the Vidhan Sabha today.
Replying to a querry by Sukhpal Singh Khera (Cong) during Question Hour, he said that the project was being launched with the aim of rehabilitation of the canal system . Administrative approval of this project had been accorded by the Irrigation Department, he added.
Mr Sekhon told the assembly that the project is proposed to be completed by March 31, 2011.
The Bist Doab Canal was designed for a capacity of 1452 cusecs.
It was built not to recharge the groundwater, but for supply of water for irrigation, he added.
The designed intensity of irrigation of the canal was 45 per cent, where as irrigation intensity achieved was 14 per cent, he added.
