Monsoon fury, 2 injured, 21 houses collapsed in Belgaum

Bangalore, June 29 (UNI) Two persons were injured and 21 houses collapsed in Belgaum due to heavy rains that also lashed the hilly districts of interior Karnataka during the last 24 hours.

Belgaum, Shimoga, Hassan and Kodagu districts experienced heavy rainfall, while monsoon remained active over coastal Karnataka.

In Belgaum, seven houses collapsed in Bailahongala taluk injuring two persons, while in Belgaum six more houses were destroyed in continuous rains.

Coastal Uttara Kannada district was also battered by heavy rains since yesterday with scores of minor rivers in spat. Sea erosion was reported from Panvinkuruva, while authorities directed people to move to safer places in Kadra as Kali reservoir neared the brim.

Aghanashini, Bedti, Kali, Shalmala and Gangavati rivers were in spat and paddy fields came under water in Shimoga district, where Talaguppa and Sagara were experiencing heavy rains.

Inflow into Krishna river, entering the state in Belgaum district, rose following heavy rainfall in Maharashtra. Rains in Kodagu district resulted an increased inflow in Cauvery, even though levels in reservoirs in the basin rose marginally.

Cauvery river also received increased inflow.
