Srinagar, June 29 (UNI) The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) in Jammu and Kashmir today sought from the Director General of Police (DGP) a detailed report of an incident in which two Army men were alleged to have attempted rape on a 17-year-old girl from a Gujjar hamlet in Bandipora district on Tuesday.
Taking suo motu cognisance of a media report, SHRC Chairperson Justice M Y Kawoosa asked the DGP to furnish the detailed report on the incident by July 30.
The attempted rape on the Gujjar girl at Pati Kunan in Bandipora district on Tuesday allegedly by two Army officials, identified as Naik Kulwant Singh and Naik Gurminder Singh of the military intelligence unit of 57 Rashtriya Rifles, had triggered violent protests in the area.
The soldiers were allegedly beaten up and paraded in public before being handed over to the police.
The Army too has ordered a court of inquiry into the incident.
The General Officer-in-Commanding (GOC) of the Srinagar-based XV Corps, also known as Chinar Corps, Lt Gen A S Sekhon took strong note of the incident and assured that the probe would be thorough and impartial.
''In case somebody has done a mistake, the Army will not condone it,'' he said.
The Corps Commander asserted that the human rights violation would not be tolerated. ''If it is proved that our men were at fault, action under rules will be taken against them,'' he said.
