Experts express concern over depletion of underground water
Jaipur, June 29 (UNI) Underground water in Jaipur has depleted by about 36 million cubic metres in four years, a Geological Survey of India Study indicates.
According to a study conducted by Dr Pawan Kuamr and Dr P C Srivastav under the guidence of GSI DDG Dr Radheshyam Goel, found that during the period of 2000-2004 the underground water level in Jaipur has depleted from 185.9 million cubic meters to 153.9 million cubic meters.
The depletion of underground water is frought with serious consequences especially in a state like Rajasthan where the mineral content in water is very high. ''If serious conservation measures were not taken to augment the underground water level, water quality will deteriorate with large doses of minerals Nitrogen and Flouride found in water,'' the study said.
The study suggested digging a two meter deep pit on the down side of the hills surrounding the city to conserve maximum rain water and have identified 88 such points where rain water could be stored to recharge underground water.
The scientists also suggested implementaiton of a license system and installing water meters on the tube wells annd borings to keep a tab on the exploitation of ground water and imposition of a tax regime which encourages minimum use of ground water.
