Andaman cautions Islanders against electrocution
Port Blair, Jun 29 (UNI) In view of the prevailing inclement weather conditions in remote islands of Andaman and Nicobar, the local administration has issued a warning to the islanders against snapping of electric lines.
''Transmission faults are occurring frequently and due to gusty wind and thundershowers, there are disturbances in supply of power in the islands. The staff of Electricity Department is working round the clock to resume the supply after rectifying the defects,'' R P Singh, Executive Engineer of Electricity Department told media today.
The major faults noticed due to which power failures occur are entangling of dry coconut trees, arecanut trees, twigs, failure of lightening arrestors, falling of trees etc in the remote archipelago.
In view of this, the Department has already sounded a caution and requested the islanders the need to inform to the nearest site office if they observe flash, abnormal sound in the electric system so that the technical team can reach and solve the problem.
''The falling and snapping of lines could be dangerous and the citizens have been asked to report such happenings to the nearest site office, police station, fire brigade so that safety measures can be taken,'' he said.
The general public has been cautioned by the department not to touch or come near the snapped lines and also not to allow other people and cattle to come near the snapped lines.
At present Andaman Islands are having vigorous southwest monsoon with thundershower at many places accompanied by gusty surface wind of more than 55 KM per hour.
Every year due to inclement weather and snapped power lines many accident are noticed in these remote scattered islands.
