Lucknow, June 29 (UNI) Reacting strongly against prejudice shown in the treatment of an HIV positive pregnant woman at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Memorial Hospital in Meerut, two lady doctors were suspended tonight on the instructions of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati.

The information was provided by Special Secretary, UP Medical and Family Welfare and Medical Education Department, Arun Kumar Mishra here tonight.

On June 27, Sunita -- wife of Rahim Abbas akias Sonu -- was rushed to the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Memorial Hospital after she experienced labour pain. The hospital is attached to the Meerut Medical College.

However, Sonu was compelled to deliver his own baby, when doctors refused to attend to his HIV positive wife.

Sunita, who had been undergoing treatment at the Meerut Medical College, was taken to the hospital, when she went into labour on Wednesday night. But, the doctors and other staff refused to attend to the 28-year-old and did not even allow her to be taken to the labour room.

As the situation became critical, Sonu was forced to deliver the baby himself and ironically, the doctors stood aside giving him instructions.

A preliminary probe by the district administration has found both the Acting Head of the Maternity department Dr Abhilasha Gupta and office assistant Dr Urmila guilty of medical negligence.

Neither of the two was present during the delivery.

The Medical Council of India (MIC), a constitutional body that looks into issues of medical ethics and controls medical education in the country, has also reacted strongly to the incident. It has set up a five-member panel to investigate the case.
