Major fidayeen attack foiled, 3 ultras, woman killed in Kashmir
Baramulla, Jun 28 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir police and troops today foiled a major fidayeen (suicide) attack when they gunned down three militants before they could storm an army camp in the frontier district of Kupwara.
Official sources said an encounter took place between three militants travelling in a vehicle at Ganai Mohalla and police and troops this afternoon at 1300 hours.
They said all the three militants in the vehicle were killed.
A woman identified as Fahmeedah was also critically wounded in the firing. She was admitted to a hospital where she died, sources said.
A police spokesman told UNI in Srinagar that a tip off was received that a group of militants had planned to storm a camp of 28 infantry Division at Salkote in the frontier district of Kupwara this afternoon.
Immediately police parties were rushed to different directions, particuarly in the areas where the security forces camps are set up.
When a police party challenged a group of three persons travelling in a vehicle near an army camp, militants resorted to indiscriminate firing.
The fire was returned and in the fierce clash three militants were killed.
The spokesman said timely action on a tip off from local sources helped foil the militant plan to storm the camp.
He said security forces and police personnel were put on alert to foil any such attack in the future.
Three ak rifles and other arms and ammunition were recovered from the slain militants.
