Major fidayeen attack foiled in Kashmir
Srinagar, June 28: Jammu and Kashmir police today foiled a major fidayeen (suicide) attack when they gunned down three militants before they could storm an army camp in the frontier district of Kupwara.
A police spokesman told sources that a tip off was received that a group of militants planned to storm a camp of 28 infantry Division at Salkote in the frontier district of Kupwara this afternoon.
He said immediately police parties were rushed to different areas, particuarly where the security forces camps are set up.
However, when a police party challenged a group of three of three persons near an army camp, militants resorted to indiscriminate firing.
The fire was returned and in the fierce clash three militants were killed.
He said later troops also joined the operation.
Spokesman said timely action on a tip off from local sources helped foil the militant plan to storm the camp.
He said security forces and police personnel were put on alert to foil any such attack in the future.
Three ak rifles and other arms and ammunition were recovered from the slain militants.
