Fidayeen attack on Army HQ foiled, 3 ultras, woman killed in Kashmir
Srinagar, June 28 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir police today foiled a major fidayeen (suicide) attack when they gunned down three militants before they could storm the headquarter of 28 Infantry Division in the fronitier district of Kupwara in north Kashmir this afternoon.
One woman was also killed in the encounter.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Kupwara, said a tip off was received that a group of militants planned to storm the headquarters of 28 infantry Division at Shalkote in the frontier district of Kupwara.
Immediately police parties were rushed to different directions, particuarly in the areas where the security forces camps are set up.
However, when a police party challenged a group of three persons travelling in a blue coloured Maruti Van JKO3-5941, a few km away from District headquarters, (militants) resorted to indiscriminate firing.
The fire was returned and in the fierce clash three militants were killed, the SSP said.
It is believed that the vehicle used for the foiled attack has been stolen as militants used a stolen vehicle for carrying out fidayeen and car bomb blast attacks in the past.
The spokesman said timely action on a tip off from local sources helped to foil the militant plan to storm the army headquarter.
He said security forces and police personnel were put on alert to foil any such attack in the future.
Three ak rifles and other arms and ammunition were recovered from the slain militants.
He said one girl was also injured in the exchange of fire.
However, a UNI report from Baramulla said the girl Fahmeeda later died in the hospital.
