JK: Army to probe into attempted rape by its men
Srinagar, June 28: The Army in Jammu and Kashmir has ordered a court of inquiry into an incident in which two Rashtriya Rifles (RR) soldiers were alleged to have attempted rape on a Gujjar girl in Bandipora district on Tuesday.
General Officer-in-Commanding (GOC) of the Srinagar-based XV Corps, also known as Chinar Corps, Lt Gen A S Sekhon took strong note of the incident and assured that the probe would be ''thorough and impartial''.
''In case somebody has done a mistake, the Army will not condone it,'' he said.
The Corps Commander asserted that the human rights violation would not be tolerated. ''If it is proved that our men were at fault, action under rules will be taken against them,'' he said.
The attempted rape on the 17-year-old girl at Pati Kunan, a Gujjar hamlet in Bandipora district, on Tuesday by two Army officials, identified as Major Joginder Singh and Naik Daljit Singh of the military intelligence unit of 57 RR, had triggered violent protests in the area yesterday.
The soldiers were allegedly beaten up and paraded in public before being handed over to the police.
