New Delhi, June 27 (UNI) The Government today released 36 lakh tonnes of non-levy (free sale) sugar for the quarter July to September, 2007.

For the month of July 2007, the non-levy sugar quota released is 10 lakh tonnes. In addition, 1.89 lakh tonnes is released under levy for Public Distribution System.

Further, the non-levy sugar quota of June 2007 has already been allowed to be sold up to July 15, 2007.

Thus, with the expected carry over of 3 lakh tonnes of non levy sugar of June 2007 quota, the total availability of sugar for consumption in the month of July comes to 14.89 lakh tonnes, an official statement here said.

The July-September, 2007 quota of non-levy sugar of 36 lakh tonnes as well as the July quota of 10 lakh tonnes and the carry over of 3 lakh tonnes from the previous month, is expected to maintain the retail prices of sugar at reasonable levels.

However, if sugar prices show any abnormal increasing trend in any State, additional releases shall be made to sugar mills of that State so as to bring down the sugar prices.
