Show Cause notice issued to controversial maternity hospital in TN

Tiruchirapalli, June 27 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Health Department today issued a show-cause notice to the controversial Mathi Surgical and Maternity Hospital, where a school boy had recently performed a 'Caesarean section' on a woman sending shock waves across the medical fraternity and public alike.

Official sources told 'UNI' here that Ezhilarasi Fakruddin, Joint Director, Health Services, Tiruchirapalli, has issued a notice to the incarcerated doctor couple K Murugesan, a surgeon and his wife M Gandhimathy, a gynaecologist who allowed their 15-year-old son, M Dhileepan Raj, a non-medico, to perform the surgery.

The district administration had taken action against the couple on the basis of a detailed investigation report submitted by a three-member team led by the Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO), S Ramanidharan here.

The Health Department had questioned the functioning of the Scan Centre in the hospital, since the couple had violated the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Test Act 1994. If the couple failed to furnish proper explainations within the stipulated time-period, orders would be issued for the closure of the Centre.

Though the administration had not sealed the hospital for various offences so far, the possibility cannot be ruled out due to the sudden shifting of in-patients from the hospital to the Government Hospital at Manapparai yesterday by the authorities concerned, the sources added.

Special police teams deputed to Chennai and Madurai, were yet to trace Dhileepan Meanwhile, a 50-year-old man raised another controversy alleging that he became physically handicapped after the wrong treatment given by Dr Murugesan.

Talking to newspersons here, one Subramanian, a tailor by profession in this district said Dr Murugesan had amputated his leg, under the pretext of treating his diabetes problem. When he consulted a few specialists, he was told there was no sign of diabetes, he alleged.

Mr Subramanian said he would lodge a complaint with the police to initiate action against the errand doctor.
