New Delhi, June 27 (UNI) Thermographic (temperature sensitive) pictures of prominent public buildings line Mumbai Stock Exchange, the National Stock Exchange and the American Centre in New Delhi have revealed excessive energy leakages from them.

The pictures have been taken with an infrared camera by NGO Greenpeace which is campaigning for increasing energy efficiency, a must for arresting global warming that is leading to climate change.

The buildings found wasting energy also include the Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai and the Intercontinental Hotel in New Delhi.

The energy waste is due to faulty design and use of inadequate insulating material like glass ect and, in certain cases due to non-maintainance, Greenpeace said here today ''These images are indicative of the electricity wastage that most of buildings cause. They also stress the need for introducing mandatory efficeincy in the design,'' K Srinivas of the NGO said.

The recent Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report on climate change has called for focussing on the building sector, pointing out that this sector has a high level of energy use and hence total emissions from this sector, both direct and indirect was very high.

The Report also states that enery efficiency in new and existing buildings in India can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 30 per cent by 2030.

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency has come out with a Building Efficiency Code for new buildings in the country last month.

However, compliance with the code is voluntary at this point of time.
