Security tightened after clash in Sultanpur jail

Sultanpur/Lucknow, June 26 (UNI) Security has been beefed up in the Sultanpur district jail, following the fierce clash between police and jail inmates that claimed five lives yesterday.

According to sources, tight security arrangements have been made in the jail premises to avoid any fresh violence, besides registering a case against the 26 prisoners involved in the clash.

The District Mmagistrate and Superintendent of Police have submitted the preliminary report to the officials.

Meanwhile, Director General Police (DGP) Vikram Singh and Director General Prisons K L Meena today wenst to the district jail to take a stock of the situation.

Earlier, Additional DGP S P Singh Pundhir had visited the spot.

The incident occurred yesterday when district jail superintendent R K Mishra was beaten up by the prisoners during an inspection of the barracks.

On being apprised about the mobile phones hidden in barrack number 12 in the jail, Mr Mishra had gone for an inspection, where prisoners assaulted him.

The inmates had opened barrack numbers 2, 4 and 14 and set afire a cooking gas cylinder near the main gate, blocking the entrance.

The fire was later controlled by the fire brigade.

Uttar Pradesh secretary (home) Javed Ahmad had said in Lucknow, the prisoners had even fired from countrymade firearms, but this fact was still to be ascertained.

The prisoners resorted to heavy stone pelting in the premises and police had to fire several rounds in the air to control the situation, he added.

The wounded prison guards Brijmani Dubey and Chandrabhan had succumbed on way to hospital, while jail inmate Munna Singh died on the spot. Twelve people severely wounded in the tussle, were rushed to hospital, where two prisoners Arvind and Sandeep Shukla later succumbed.
