Rs 10,920 crore disbursed to sugarcane farmers

Lucknow, June 26 (UNI) Over Rs 10,920 crore have so far been disbursed among cane farmers as payments in the 2006-07 sugarcane crushing season.

Principal secretary, sugarcane development and sugarmills Harmindar Raj Singh said that last year around this time, only Rs 6,876 crore had been disbursed to cane growers.

He said the owners of all private sugarmills had been directed to ensure timely payment of dues to farmers.

Mr Singh also warned of strict action against sugarmills, who default on payment, besides submitting weekly report with the cane commissioner.

Last year, a total of 114 sugarmills had participated in the crushing.

This year, 22 mills of sugar corporation, 28 of federation and 83 private sugarmills had participated in crushing the.
