Punjab searches for meritorious sportspersons
Patiala, June 26 (UNI) The Punjab Sports Department is conducting two-day trials at the Punjabi University here for selecting meritorious sportspersons from the affiliated colleges of Punjabi University.
According to the local district sports officer, Ravinder Rishi, who is coordinating the event, trials were completed for girls on the openig day today and will be held for boys tomorrow for a number of sport streams including athletics, basketball, badminton, football, gymnastics, hockey, handball, judo, kabaddi, swimming, volleyball, wrestling, weightlifting and cycling.
In all 198 girls appeared in the trials out of which as many as 145 made it to the merit lists. However, the final list will be known after the Punjab Sports Director, Pargat Singh and Raj Kumar Sharma, Director of Sports, Punjabi University join the committee to give a final shape to the merit list.
The selection committee comprised Brig.Labh Singh, Sukhchain Singh Cheema, Jaipal Singh, S.L. Salvan and T.S.Sandhu.
The selected boys and girls will be admitted in various Sports Wings of the Punjab Sports Department in different Districts in Punjab. They will be given free education, free boarding and lodging, free sports equipment, besides specialized coaching, an official release said here today.
