New Delhi, June 26 (UNI) A letter was submitted to the Chief Justice of India today praying for issuing directions to the Election Commission on India to cancel the nomination of UPA presidential candidate Pratibha Patil for suppressing relevant information in her nomination papers.

Sanjay Tiwari, who termed himself president of NGO, Indraprastha People, has prayed to Justice K G Balakrishnan to treat his letter as a Public Interest Litigation.

According to the letter, Ms Patil was the founder chairman of Muktai Sugar Mill in Maharashtra and had taken a loan of Rs 17.5 crore from a cooperative bank in Mumbai in 1994.

The mill now appears on the defaulters list and the bank is going to launch proceedings for auction of the mill, which is owned and controlled by the family members of Ms Patil.

The letter also alleges that Pratibha Cooperative Bank Ltd was banned from conducting banking business by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

Many people had taken the membership of the bank and had deposited their hard earned money, but had to suffer losses.

Following this, RBI has cancelled its license.

The UPA-presidential nominee is also facing allegations of shielding her brother, who faces murder charges.

According to the letter, if a person with such dubious antecedents becomes President of India, it will lower the dignity of the august office of the President.

Ms Patil had filed her nomination papers on Saturday after resigning from the post of Governor of Rajasthan.

Independent candidate backed by NDA, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat is contesting against her.
