Shillong, Jun 26: The Khasi Student's Union(KSU) has temporarily suspended its 'six-night public curfew', in the three districts of Meghalaya, on the request of a women's organisation - Synjuk Ki Seng Longkmie(SKSL).

The student's body, reciprocated to the request of the SKSL after the Chairman of Cabinet Committee on Public Grievances Martle Mukhim assured the Mother's Union that the state government would look into the demands of the women's organisation, provided the KSU withdrew its stir.

Mr Mukhim had assured the Mother's Union that the government would be taken up seriously and appropriate recommendations submitted to the government for creating a conducive atmosphere for talks with the KSU.

The state Cabinet, which met hurriedly yesterday, entrusted Mr Mukhim with the task of negotiating with the women's organisation, which offered to take up the demands of the KSU with the government.

The student's body, which spearheaded the movement against Uranium mining since June 4, had called for fresh 'night public curfew' from 2000 hours today to 0500 hours of July 1 everyday in East, West Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi districts of the state, demanding the release of their jailed activists and opposing uranium mining in the state's West Khasi Hills district.

The government had arrested 17 KSU activists and booked seven others under the Meghalaya Preventive Detention Act(MPDA) for imposing random strikes, office-picketing and road-blockades.

Meanwhile, the Hynniewtrep National Youth Federation(HNYF) has urged the state government to initiate dialogue with the KSU to end the impasse over the present crisis.

''The NGOs' agitations are pressure tactics to achieve their demands,'' HNYF President GH Kharshanlor said.
