Human rights activist arrested on charges of cheating

Barrackpore, Jun 26 (UNI) A human rights activist from Kanchrapara was taken into custody last night for allegedly cheating people in the state, police said today.

According to the police, 35-year old Arup Dey Tapadar was apprehended from his Jonepur residence under Beejpur police station in North 24 Parganas on specific complaints from people here.

He was allegedly involved in cheating people by taking money from them against promises of providing them jobs in the army, railways and also solving police cases.

A case was registered against Mr Tapadar today and he has been produced before the magistrate at the sub-divisional court here today, police said, adding that the accused was said to be a block level activist of the Committee for People's Democratic Rights.
