Chennai, June 26: The designated court, trying CBI cases here, will conduct the entire trial in the multi-crore stamp paper case involving Abdul Karim Telgi through 'video conferencing' during the first week of July.

For the first time, the trial would be conducted in the IX Additional Sessions Court through video conferencing in the country.

The authorities have installed three video cameras in various angles to cover the proceedings by the Presiding Officer and the court hall, official sources said today.

Since Telgi was lodged in a Karnataka prison and security personnel especially CBI personnel ruling out the possibility of bringing him to Chennai for producing him before the designated court due to security, authorities here thought it fit to hold the trial through video conferencing after obtaining permission from the Tamil Nadu government.

The conferencing will cover three places, including the designated court, the prison where Telgi is incarcerated and another prison where one of his accomplice was lodged.

The trial, including witness deposition, examination and questioning of the witnesses, will be conducted through video conferencing. Counsel for the accused will interact with the prosecution or the judge through this mode.

To ensure smooth interaction with Telgi and the co-accused, the prosecution had engaged an official translator.

As an experimental measure, the designated court extended the remand of Telgi once through video conferencing.

All arrangements would be in place by the first week of next month when the matter would come up for hearing again. Charges would be framed on that day, the sources added.
