Strict action against erring contractors if potholes appear

Mumbai, Jun 25 (UNI) The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) today said strict action would be initiated against erring road contractors if potholes surface on the roads, developed by them in the past two years.

Additional Municipal Commissioner Shrikant Singh told mediapersons here ''In the past two years the roads have been made by adhering to new specifications and they are of superior quality.

But if potholes appear on the roads developed in the past two years, then stringent action will be initiated against the contractors for shoddy work.'' He explained that technically the lifespan of an asphalt road is three to five years. And after this period they develop cracks and potholes.

That apart, the older roads develop cracks and potholes during the rains and the BMC is working on replacing the old ones with new.

The BMC gives permission for digging trenches too for utility purposes and the roads do get damaged in the process, Mr Singh said.

The BMC also undertakes work on 250-300 km of road annually with assistance from the traffic department.
