People Watch demands special law against torture

Jaipur, Jun 25 (UNI) Tamil Nadu based People Watch Group which is spearheading the National Project on Preventing Torture In India has urged the government to enact a special law for making torture a punishable offence and providing security to torture victims and witnesses.

The group has sent a memorandum to President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam on the eve of the Anti Torture Day today. It has also urged the President to intervene to ensure early ratification to the 1984 UN Resolution against torture by the government of India.

The group has also organised programmes in Ajmer, Jaipur, Kota and Jodhpur to mark the day, its spokesperson Karol Geetha said.
