Pandemonium at public meet on BC status for Muslims
Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, June 25 (UNI) Pandemonium prevailed at a public hearing here today on according Backward Class status to Muslims with allegations of upper caste conspiracy surfacing.
Deposing before Justice D Subramanayam Commission, Advocate Y Koteswara Rao alleged a conspiracy by upper caste Hindus to deny social and economic justice to Muslims sparking protests.
Several Muslims said they were suffering from poverty and illiteracy and the share of the community in employment and education was going down.
While Mr K S Lakshmana Rao, MLC, pleaded for four per cent quota to maintain the 50 per cent ceiling for reservation as prescribed by the Supreme Court, Mr D M Varaprasad, MLC, said the move should not be at the expense of the BCs who already figure in the schedule.
