Barrackpore, June 25: About 65 grams of gold ornaments were stolen from Kali temple at Shyamnagar under Jagaddal police station in North 24-Parganas district last night.

An FIR about the theft of ornaments worth Rs 50,000 was lodged with the local police station today.

The Shyamnagar Kali temple is one of the famous holi sites of the hindus since its foundation in the 19th century as devotees from many places come round the year to have dharsan.

The priest of the temple claimed that he had closed the doors of the shrine after performing puja at 2030 hours on Sunday.

As Becharam, the priest, arrived to perform puja this morning at about 0615 hours he found the doors were open and the box of the ornaments was empty.

Few years back miscreants from this temple had stolen a metal idol, which was later recovered from a train compartment.

The Dutta Kali temple at Jawpur Road under Dum Dum police station in the district was looted last week and police were yet to arrest the culprits.
