New mechanism to prevent bogus voting: CEO

Madurai, June 25 (UNI) A new mechanism will be put in place, for the first time, to detect and prevent bogus voting in tomorrow's by-election to the Madurai West Assembly constituency, Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Naresh Gupta said tonight.

Talking to newspersons here, Mr Gupta, who refused to explain the details of the new system, said the system was designed and adopted to ensure elimination of bogus voting to the maximum extent.

Mr Gupta said 20 ''Semi-Static'' observers were being posted in the constituency to ascertain the identity of voters.

The Election Commission (EC) had engaged a team of scientists, drawn from reputed institutions, to study the quality of the materials used in the elections.

They would give suggestions on improving the materials like the indelible ink and EVMs.

The team comprises scientists from IIT, Delhi, Central Institute of Plastic Engineering, Chennai, and Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute, West Bengal, he added.
