India welcomes Nepal's election announcement

New Delhi, June 25 (UNI) India today welcomed the announcement of the poll date for elections to the Constituent Assembly, stating it would help the cause of democracy, peace and development.

''The announcement of the date for elections to the Constituent Assembly is an important step forward in the institutionalization of democracy, peace and development in Nepal,'' a foreign office spokesman told reporters who sought his reaction.

''We wish the Government of Nepal all success in the holding of these elections in a manner that the people of Nepal can freely and fairly determine the future of their country.'' As a close friend and neighbour of Nepal, India was ready to render whatever support was required to achieve these key objectives, he said.
