Mysore, June 25 (UNI) Heavy monsoon rains lashed Kodagu district and the catchment areas of River Cauvery, causing steep rise in the level at Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) and other reservoirs in the basin.

The water level at KRS, which was just 67.32 ft against the full mark of 124.8 ft yesterday, jumped to 80.30 ft today. The inflow shot up to 52,859 cusecs this morning from a paltry 250 cusecs two days ago. The level of the reservoir on the same day during last year was at 95.65 ft.

Irrigation Department officials said good the inflow was likely to continue for a few more days, despite decrease in the rainfall.

Due to heavy rains in Wynad area of Kerala and the catchment of the Kabini reservoir in this district, the inflow rose to 21,235 cusecs. The water level was at 2266.11 ft as against the maximum level of 2284 ft.

The inflow also increased to Harangi reservoir across Cauvery in Kodagu district with the level reaching 2820 ft against the full capacity of 2859 feet. The inflow was more than 15,000 cusecs.

Mysore and Mandya districts coming under the Cauvery basin were reeling under shortage of water for both drinking and agriculture purpose due to failure of early monsoon rains which had resulted in severe depletion of water level in reservoirs.
