Farakka, Jun 24(UNI) Work for expansion of the arterial National Highway 34 will begin next year, subject to acquisition of the required land from the local people, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee today said.

Inaugurating the bailey bridge at Ballarpur, Mr Mukherjee urged that the local people possessing land by the side of the highway to give their plots to the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).

He said NHAI would give suitable compensation to the land owners if they extended cooperation in making NH 34 a four-lane highway.

The preparation of detailed report on the project is in progress and is likely to be completed by October this year, he added.

Speaking on the occasion, state PWD Minister Kshiti Goswami said the problem of huge traffic congestion would continue unless the Highway is made into a four lane one.
