Dye exports to touch Rs 12,000 cr by 2011: DMAI

Mumbai, Jun 24: Riding high on the growing global market for dye, The Dyestuffs Manufacturers Association of India (DMAI) is hoping to touch an exports target of Rs 12,000 crore by March 2011.

Comprised of around 325 members engaged in manufacturing of dyes for various purposes like textile, leather, paper, plastics, inks, paints, food and cosmetics as well as soaps and detergents, DMAI controls around 7.5 per cent of the USD 25 billion global market.

Addressing at 57 Annual General Meeting (AGM) of DMAI and Awards 2006-07 function held here recently its President Janak Mehta stated that presently the total exports of these players comes to around Rs 7,000 crore.

''Our industry is mostly export-oriented. Over 50 per cent of our turnover is exported to major countries like US, EU, Far East&South East Asia. Moreover, the dye industry is growing annually at 20 per cent. We are, therefore, hoping to touch an export target of Rs 12,000 crore by 2011.'' Mr Mehta stated that the global textile market is slowly shifting to China and India.

''With the textile quota abolishment this January, the textile market will be in a good shape in India in the next five years. We don't want to miss out on the growth in this sector. Therefore, we are also hoping to raise our domestic sales, especially in the textile industry. The capacity of dye manufacturers across the country would be roughly around 1,50,000 tonnes per annum. The manufacturers are also looking for capacity expansion in the near future,'' said Mr Mehta.

Annual Awards for the year 2006-2007 for excellence in several fields were presented. Trophies were presented to the students, who topped their respective classes at UICT Dyes Division for 2006-2007.

Metrochem Industries Ltd, Gujarat, was awarded the prestigious Anil Mehta Award for overall excellence. Metrochem is today, recognised the world over, as a quality manufacturer and supplier of synthetic organic dyes&dye intermediates.

More than 150 members of the Association and other dignitaries attended the program, where an open discussion round to address important issues concerning the industry were talked about.
