Dr Hrishikesh Pai is the new president of IAGE

Ahmedabad, June 23 (UNI) Dr Hrishikesh Pai has been elected as the President of the Indian Association of Gynecological Endoscopists (IAGE).

Speaking to newspersons today, Dr Pai who is a consulting Gynaecologist at Leelavati hospital in Mumbai, said family planning programme needs to be promoted more aggressively to control the growing population in India.

''We will start a movement to create awareness among the masses about sterilization. There are several litigations against doctors who performed sterilization. Hence they are afraid of encouraging sterilization,'' he said.

However, since the government has taken measures to insure both doctors and the patients, the situation will definitely bring changes, he said.

As the new president of IAGE, Dr Pai said he will strive to encourage new development like robotic surgery. Here robots will be attached to laparoscopy instruments to perform surgery.

''As a social commitment to the society, I would like to see more newcomers in this field to learn basic endoscopy,'' he said.

Dr Pai said he plans to perform at least three surgeries free of cost per month and two sterilizations free per month for the economically-disadvantaged classes of the society.

Apart from this, during his two-year tenure, he will conduct public forums in various cities to promote the theme of reaching advanced, advantageous, affordable, achievable and accessible endoscopy to the masses.

He said that last year he along with Dr Nandita Palshetkar successfully launched the Human Egg Bank at Lilavati hospital and also first ovarian tissue bank to help mainly the young cancer patients. Many young patients suffering from cancer and other diseases can use these eggs after their treatment for fertilie, he said.

Apart from this, Dr Pai said IAGE would publish a textbooks on Endoscopic surgery and hold symposiums on newer surgical advancements. He said that there are some advantages of endoscopy over traditional surgery which include less invasion, post operative effects and faster mobilization, he added.
