TN Govt to set up modern abattoirs in 65 municipalities

Chennai, June 22 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Government has decided to set up modern slaughter houses in 65 municipalities across the State at a cost of Rs 6.5 crore.

A recent Government Order said, after careful examination, had accepted the proposal and accorded administrative sanction for releasing 50 per cent of the amount as grant and the balance to be mobilised by the local bodies for the construction of abattoirs in 2007-2008.

Besides, the Government had also sanctioned the proposal for setting up gasifier crematoria in 14 municipalities.

According to another Government Order, the crematoria installation works would be taken up at a cost of Rs 5.6 crore.

The order said of this amount, 50 per cent would be sanctioned as grant and the rest should be met by the municipalities from its funds.

The order noted that corpses were now being burnt in the conventional method using wood and cowdung cakes, which took considerable time and effort while being expensive and affecting the environment.
