Thai govt expresses interest to invest in northeast

Agartala, Jun 22 (UNI) The Thailand government would invest in infrastructure development of northeast.

Talking to media in Agartala airport today, Thailand Commerce Minister Krirk-krai Jirapaet said that the business delegation of Thailand has come to Northeast to invest in different sectors in the region.

'' We have already identified tourism, agro industries, infrastructure and capacity building sectors in Northeast India for investment,'' Mr Jirapaet said adding that India has potential and Thailand is interested to take the advantage.

Regarding India's membership in ASEAN, he said the association has been considering the issue but geographical distance of India from the southeastern part of Asia becomes the main hurdle. Recently four new countries have got the ASEAN membership.

A 29-member Thailand delegation accompanied by Minister for Development of Northeastern Region (DoNER) Mani Shankar Aiyar and Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jairam Ramesh and the top officials of both the ministries have arrived here this morning on a four-day visit with a view to exploring trade opportunity in Northeast.
