Language used against Kalam was boorish, churlish: Jaya

New Delhi, June 22 (UNI) Stating that President APJ Abdul Kalam was the people's choice and not of a few ''scheming politicians'', AIADMK supremo and prime architect of the newly launched United National Progressive Alliance(UNPA) J Jayalalithaa today came down heavily on the Congress and other parties for using ''boorish and churlish'' language against him.

Expressing the Alliance's anguish over the developments which made Dr Kalam reconsider his acceptance of their proposal for go in for a second term, the AIADMK leader said the language and the conduct of some high functionaries in the country was absolutely unbecoming of the offices they held.

She was addressing a news conference after UNPA's meeting with Dr Kalam, and later with NDA leaders.

The statements issued by those in high offices was ''uncivilised and denigrated the country's highest office,'' said Ms Jayalalithaa.

Dr Kalam told ''us when we called on him this evening that he was deeply wounded by these statements and did not want to be dragged into all this,'' she said.

Ms Jayalalithaa said Dr Kalam was the ideal choice as he was the people's President, and'' we opted for him as he was a non-political and non-controversial person who, as surveys after surveys have shown, was the choice of an overwhelming majority of the people.'' ''He is an intellectual, a scientist, a visionary, a person liked by farmers, students, the poor, the middle class and the rich alike, so he was our natural choice because in a democracy the will of the people should prevail,'' she said.
